Every Dog Has His Day

I’ve gone on and on about my love for Philip Seymour Hoffman for years now and on Sunday night all my years of hero worship were compounded when he shuffled on stage to collect his Best Actor Academy Award.  He made a touching speech, dedicated to his mother who ‘raised four kids alone’ – he was sweet, humble and genuinely emotional.  Making me love him even more.

To me, he is the best kind of actor, no eye-candy and will never be a sex symbol but the passion he has put into every role he has done?  You can’t match it.

You’ll never find me pinning up a picture of a pretty but vacuous actor on my wall.  I prefer realism in my heroes, character actors who aren’t afraid of a bit of method to their madness.  My favourites are PSH, William H. Macy (his loser Bernie Lootz in The Cooler? Oh yeah!), Paul Giamatti and Bill Murray (Fragglehump’s favourite man).

These men could convince you they had been to the bottom of hell and back again with the flicker of a raised eyebrow and a twenty second monologue.

As the official ‘Groupie for the Underdog’ I say watch these men ‘cos you ain’t seen nothing yet!
