Because Peter would not dare...
The following is from an untitled children’s story by Robin Birdsong (yes, that’s a real name – isn’t it pretty?) who is a very good friend of my brother’s. She is from New York and I haven’t met her yet but both my brother and Wondy Mum could wax lyrical on her virtues ‘til the cows came home, so I feel like I know her in some small way. Hi Robin!
Any feedback would be much appreciated as this is a work in progress and I feel will be a fantastical one. You can leave comments here or email me direct and I will pass them on – thank you!
Because Peter would not dare...
There were high trees to climb in the garden,
and grass to lie on, to make green angels in.
And even though,
all the children would go,
Peter did not dare to go, because Peter did not dare.
In his house on a hill
Peter stood and leaned on the windowsill.
And while all the children went out,
Peter never did.
Peter never went anywhere,
because Peter did not dare.
And so the girls played beneath him
and the boys ran below
and every child would stop and call
"Come out and play with us!"
"Come out with us and play ball!"
But Peter shook his head, "No,"
Because Peter would not go
because Peter would not dare to go,
because Peter would not dare.
There were 10,000 leaves with colors
that Peter would never see
and 11 different ways of jumping
and 12 ways to climb a tree.
But Peter would never know...
....And the other children would.
They had all the fun they could,
while they played
and laughed
and shouted out
and knew that Fun Was Good.
But Peter did not know,
because Peter did not go,
Because Peter did not dare to go,
Because Peter did not dare.
