Everything is Everything

Who the hell ever came up with the saying "Everything is everything"?

I've heard it more that once and know it is the title of a Diana Ross album, and also a track by Lauryn Hill ("Everything is everything, what is meant to be, will be"). But really, what is the deal?

Well, people say it to mean just that: what will be will be, Que Sera Sera, all that hokum - but it irritates me more than anything else.

Everything is everything? How evasive is that?

"Oh my boyfriend dumped me last night."

"Erm, yeah but he dumped me for a dude..."
"Yeah but remember: everything is everything."
"...who does drag shows dressed as Doris Day..."
"Everything is everything, my sweet."
"I'm pregnant"

"Hey - EVERTHING IS EVERYTHING my friend - REMEMBER?!!!!!"

It is my least favourite saying, even over "At the end of the day."
